What to Expect in a Hostel Bathroom

Hostels are one of the most popular options when it comes to accommodation while traveling. They are friendly on your wallet and will often give you easy access to your travel destination. If you’ve ever considered staying at a hostel, chances are that one of your worries is having to use shared bathrooms. This is often seen as not ideal, but there are definitely many ways you can make your hostel experience worth it despite having to share a bathroom. Here are some of our tips:

Bring flip-flops

Depending on where you are staying, it may be a good idea to bring a pair of flip-flops to wear into the shared bathroom, as the floors might be a little messier than it would be in an en-suite hotel bathroom. If you’re in a hot country, this is definitely recommended anyways. Where people have gone and what they bring into a bathroom is unpredictable, so you best keep the bottoms of your feet clean and protected.

Pack shampoo and conditioner

Your hostel may or may not already provide shampoo and conditioner or body wash for you, but if they do not, you should go and buy some at the local convenience store. Alternatively, you can bring your own. It is smart to bring your own body wash, shampoo, and conditioner anyways in the case that it is not provided. It is better to be safe than sorry, and when you arrive at your accommodation, you might just want to take a nice shower and not have to go out and buy things.

Wake up early if you want hot water

When many people are staying in a hostel, hot water can run out. Therefore, you should expect to have some lukewarm showers on occasion. If you want to get a hot shower, you might have to make an effort to wake up early and shower first thing in the morning before everyone else uses up all the hot water. If all a hostel has to offer is cold water, you should check reviews to find out this information. Make sure that you know this before you agree to stay at the hostel.

Do research to gauge bathroom quality

Not all bathrooms will be the same, especially when you are staying in a hostel. How’s the bathrooms can be quite nice, but sometimes you really never know what you’ll get. You should, again, go to the reviews, look at pictures on the website, and find out for yourself before you book a place to stay. You can even make calls to find out about whether or not they provide products for showers if they have hot water and anything else you might be wondering.

Learn shared bathroom etiquette

Many people will be at this hostel from multiple cultural backgrounds cohabitating in the same place. This could be either good or bad when it comes to bathroom etiquette, as things can get unpleasant and messy. You don’t want to be the person causing the problems, so it is important that you observe good shared bathroom etiquette because if everyone made an effort to respect others, the bathroom would stay clean. It is important that you clean up after yourself, don’t use up all the hot water, don’t take long showers, and be considerate of everyone else at the hostel! In the end, you should be thoughtful and not hog a shower stall for half an hour or make a huge mess every single time you shower. You are not the only one using the restroom, and you probably would not appreciate it if you had to walk into a dirty bathroom every day.
